Why should I be using cloth nappies?

It's responsible

Did you know 95% of Australian families use disposable nappies everyday. That's approximately 2 billion nappies going into landfill sites each year!

Reducing your household waste is a major benefit for the environment.

It will save you money

If you decide to purchase Buttons Diapers, you will get everything you need to cloth nappy your baby for $200 (see our FAQ page).

If you decide to use disposable nappies from birth to toilet training, you could use approximately 10 000 disposable nappies and spend over $2000 per child.

It's better for your baby

Modern cloth nappies are gentle and soft on your babies bottom. You won't be exposing your babies sensitive skin to the harsh chemicals used in disposable nappies.

Your baby can swim in them

Swimming lessons can start as early as 3 months old to help teach little ones water safety and build confidence. Some newborns are too small for the disposable swimming nappies available for purchase at the local supermarket, so why not use Buttons Diapers instead.

All of Buttons Diapers covers can be used for swimming with or without the insert.

They grow with your baby

Buttons Diapers have adjustable snaps to fit your growing baby. The one size nappies can fit babies from 4-15.5kg.

Great resale value

When your baby has outgrown using cloth nappies and is fully toilet trained, you can use Buttons Diapers on your next baby. Alternatively, you could pass them onto another family member or friend or sell them at a second hand market or website.

How do I use Buttons Diapers?

Just SNAP and GO!

1. Adjust the snaps on the front of your cover to get it to the right height.

2. Snap in your insert (daytime insert for during the day or add the night time insert underneath the daytime insert when your baby goes to sleep at night).

3. Put your Buttons Diaper on your little one and off you go.

4. When it's time for a nappy change, just snap the dirty insert out, snap in a clean one and put it back on your baby.

* You can reuse the cover throughout the day until it has been soiled.

How many nappies will I need for full time use?

Buttons recommends buying enough nappies to get you through 2-3 days of diapering using the 1-3 ration: one cover for every 3 daytime inserts.

Typically this is:

  • 8-10 one size covers
  • 18-24 daytime inserts
  • 2-3 night time doublers

With the Buttons two-in-one system, the wipeable cover can be used multiple times before washing saving you a lot of money. You can cloth nappy your baby with our All You Need Pack from birth until he/she is toilet trained for as little as $312!

*This price of $312 is accurate when adding 8 packs of SMALL microfiber daytime inserts and 8 one size covers

How many nappies will I need for part time use?

Some people have told us they want to use cloth nappies but don't feel confident using them out and about.

We recommend that you purchase at least four one size covers and four packs of 3 inserts to get you started on your cloth journey.  This will be equivalent to 12 nappies and will help you reduce your household waste and save you money.

* I have been using 12 large inserts and 6 one size covers on my daughter since she was 8kg (about 10 months old - she is now 2). I wash everyday. I also have 6x size 2 cotton prefolds as a back up if it's raining on the Sunshine Coast as they dry super quick.

What inserts do you stock?

We currently stock four different types of Buttons Inserts - Hemp/Cotton Daytime Inserts, Microfiber Daytime Inserts, Microfiber Nightime Doublers and Buttons Cotton Prefolds.

What are micro-fiber daytime inserts?

Buttons stay-dry microfiber daytime inserts are made of 4 layers of absorbent microfiber, with a layer of moisture-wicking fleece on top to keep baby feeling dry.

Stay-dry microfiber inserts come in all 3 sizes for your growing baby:

- Small inserts fit babies from 3 - 7kg (inserts are 28cm in length)

- Large inserts fit babies from 7 - 11.5kg (inserts are 33cm in length)

- X-Large inserts fit babies from 11.5 - 18kg (inserts are 38cm in length)

What are the hemp / cotton daytime inserts made out of?

Buttons Diapers hemp/cotton daytime inserts are made of 4 layers of absorbent 55% hemp & 45% organic cotton, with a layer of moisture-wicking fleece on top.  Hemp is one of the most sustainable fabrics, with pesticides and extra irrigation usually unnecessary, meaning very low environmental and social impact.

Hemp/cotton inserts come in all 3 sizes for your growing baby:

- Small inserts fit babies from 3 - 7kg (inserts are 28cm in length)

- Large inserts fit babies from 7 - 11.5kg (inserts are 33cm in length)

- X-Large inserts fit babies from 11.5 - 18kg (inserts are 38cm in length)

What are Buttons Prefolds?

Made of 100% unbleached cotton, woven with a lint-free gauze weave for durability and softness. They fit perfectly inside the diaper covers without folding it over length-wise. Buttons prefolds are 4x8x4, which means there are 4 layers on each side panel and 8 layers in the center panel, making them highly absorbent.

Prefold Sizes: .
Size 1: 3-5.5kg, 30cm x 34cm
Size 2: 5.5-11.5kg, 35.5cm x 38
Size 3: 11.5-18kg, 40cm x 46cm

What are nighttime doublers?

Buttons microfiber nighttime doublers have 6 absorbent layers of microfiber for extra absorbency. They work as a doubler when snapped underneath Buttons daytime inserts.

Microfiber doublers are available in all 3 sizes for your growing baby:

- Small inserts fit babies from 3 - 7kg (inserts are 28cm in length)

- Large inserts fit babies from 7 - 11.5kg (inserts are 33cm in length)

- X-Large inserts fit babies from 11.5 - 18kg (inserts are 38cm in length)

Note: the nighttime doubler is made to be used with our daytime insert snapped on top. Only the daytime insert has a top layer of soft moisture-wicking fleece to keep baby's skin dry.

How do I wash my nappies?

washing cloth nappies, wash routine for cloth nappies, reduce household waste, reusable baby product

Prepping your nappies

Buttons recommends that you pre-wash and dry your inserts before use. This is commonly know as 'prepping' your modern cloth nappies and will make them more absorbent. For stay dry microfibre inserts, wash and dry 3-4 times.

Buttons inserts can be air dried or machine dried but Buttons highly recommend air drying reusable cloth nappies to prolong their life. Washing cloth nappies is easy!

Wash routine

  • Remove solids
  • Seperate insert from cover
  • Rinse cold
  • Wash warm with detergent
  • Dry low or hang dry

* You can reuse your Buttons cover throughout the day if it has not been soiled

Stain Removal

Sunlight - it's natural and free! Hang out wet inserts and let them dry in the sunlight for a couple of hours. Hanging the inserts out on a cloudy day works too but sometimes not as effectively.

Recommendation

We recommend that you wash your nappies at least every second day.  Washing every second day will decrease the chance of your covers delaminating.
